What is Pilates?

Pilates is a mind-body exercise that evolved from the principles of Joseph Pilates. Originally named “Contrology,” Joseph Pilates created his exercise technique for rehabilitation. Later, his technique was adopted by dancers and athletes, and now it is embraced by millions. Pilates builds strength without bulk, improves flexibility, agility and posture, teaches body awareness and helps to prevent injury. So now matter what your age or condition, Pilates will work for you!

At Personal Touch Pilates, we strive to create a program that suits your individual needs and goals. We do this by teaching our students the Classical Pilates Method which is based upon a full, integrated system of equipment– the Reformer, the Tower End of the Cadillac, the Mat and the Power Circle. By learning the technique just as Joseph Pilates intended, students at Personal Touch Pilates have a more authentic, quality and progressive experience.

Why Pilates Equipment vs. Mat Only

While mat classes are the typical entry into Pilates for many participants, Classical Mat exercises are only a small portion of the technique. In fact, only 25% of the Pilates exercise repertoire can be performed on a mat. By adding equipment into your Pilates practice, you will experience a wider range of exercises that is more fully integrated as a system. The equipment works better and faster to change the body, as the springs on the equipment provide support and resistance that allow you to find and enhance your core connection in a way that is difficult to do on the Mat alone. The equipment allows you to shape, tone, lengthen and align quite differently than the Mat. Furthermore, additional advanced core work is available on equipment for the more accomplished practitioner. Plus, It’s fun!
